Experience, TiE Youth

Intel Involved Global Hero 2015

August 22, 2016

For the past 3 years, I’ve been volunteering as Instructor and Curriculum designer for the excellent Oregon TiE Youth Entrepreneurs (TYE) program. Being part of a young person’s entrepreneurial journey, showing them the methods and tools to turn ideas into opportunities, is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. That moment when they realize they can find their customer, that they can build it themselves, that they have a skill that others value, that it’s possible for them to be an entrepreneur- that’s magical.

When I returned to Intel in late 2014, after almost 2 years on my own, I thought I’d have to dial back my participation in TYE and focus in on my “day job.”  My first 1:1 with my senior manager ended with one request- don’t stop, turn it up. I was pleasantly shocked at how supportive Intel has been for my passion projects. Late in 2015, my excellent colleague and friend Mike Premi nominated me for the Global Hero Award, given by Intel Involved (Intel’s program for employee volunteerism) to one Intel employee each year. I was honored and humbled to receive this prestigious award for my work with TYE and eNABLE 3D printed prosthetic hands. The amazing Rob Kelton and Tim Herman produced this video documenting my work and it’s posted here with their permission/credit. Hope you enjoy it- feedback is welcome!
